These are supplier offering ranges, not evidence that every diameter can be combined with every thickness or that each hole is a qualified copper-filled via.

Ask for the actual layer span, entry and minimum diameter, taper, metallization structure, continuity evidence and connection to the redistribution layers. A smooth raw surface does not, by itself, establish copper adhesion.

Define surface preparation, seed and conductor layers, via-wall coverage, patterning and interfaces to build-up materials with the process provider. Request evidence from the proposed stack rather than a bare-glass coupon. Do not claim a data-rate improvement from a lower material-loss number without holding route length, conductor construction and the remaining channel constant.

Mechanical Handling and Edge Quality Need Explicit Controls

Glass-core processing needs a handling and inspection plan that preserves the approved panel condition. This article instead addresses permanent glass cores and their interconnect qualification.

FAQ

Does FR-4 already count as a glass-core substrate?

Not in the solid-glass-core meaning used here. FR-4 is a glass-reinforced resin composite, while a glass core is a selected solid glass material integrated into an interconnect stack. Their manufacturing routes and properties differ. Specify the actual cross-section and materials so a request for “glass PCB” is not interpreted as an ordinary fiberglass board.

Will a glass-core package be transparent after manufacturing?

Not necessarily. Copper routing, planes, polymer layers, components and package materials can obscure the glass. Optical transparency of a starting panel is not a guarantee of a clear finished assembly. If appearance or optical transmission is a requirement, specify it separately from electrical routing and review the final stack rather than the raw material alone.

Is a glass core the same as a glass carrier wafer?

No. A permanent core remains in the functional interconnect structure; a carrier supports processing and may later be removed. Surface treatment, release behavior and acceptance requirements follow the role. A glass material suitable for temporary handling is not automatically qualified as the permanent substrate carrying vias and conductor layers in the final product.

Does low expansion mean glass cannot crack?

No. Expansion mismatch is only one contributor to mechanical behavior. Geometry, defects, handling, residual stress and local interfaces also matter. A smaller free-expansion difference does not establish fracture resistance in a bonded assembly. Evaluate the actual construction and required exposures, with inspection methods and acceptance limits defined before the qualification run.

Can a normal PCB supplier make any TGV design?

Do not assume so. Hole formation, glass handling, metallization and packaging integration require a compatible process and evidence for the proposed geometry. Ask for project-specific confirmation and representative qualification records. A supplier’s conventional plated-through-hole capability or a raw-glass sample does not establish production capability for a completed glass-core interconnect.

Does a small TGV automatically provide high-density routing?

No. Surface pads, registration, keepouts, build-up wiring and connection requirements can set the usable pitch. A hole-diameter figure does not define the full routing cell. Review the complete stack and escape geometry, and confirm that the proposed feature combination is qualified rather than combining unrelated minimum numbers from different configurations.

Can glass replace a ceramic substrate for heat removal?

Not from the material name alone. Compare the selected grades, thicknesses, metallization, heat-source geometry and cooling interfaces against the same thermal requirement. Electrical loss, dimensional stability and thermal conduction are different properties. A glass-core packaging advantage does not establish an equivalent heat path to a qualified ceramic power substrate.

Do public glass-substrate announcements prove mass-production readiness?

No. An announcement may describe development, a pilot platform or a particular product configuration. Verify the relevant supplier’s current process, accepted geometry, test evidence and commercial terms for your design. Keep development feasibility, qualified production and committed supply separate; none can be inferred reliably from a headline or a single demonstration sample.

To discuss the appropriate PCB or special-substrate route, send Best Technology your stack concept, interconnect requirements, drawings and qualification expectations at sales@bestpcbs.com.
